Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup sushi rice
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 1/2 tablespoon sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 nori sheet
  • 1/4 avocado, thinly sliced
  • 2 slices of cucumber, julienned
  • 2 ounces sushi-grade raw fish (tuna or salmon)
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • Wasabi and pickled ginger (to taste)

Cooking Instructions

  1. Rinse 1/2 cup sushi rice until the water runs clear. Cook with 1/2 cup water in a rice cooker.
  2. In a small bowl, mix 1 tablespoon rice vinegar, 1/2 tablespoon sugar, and 1/4 teaspoon salt until dissolved.
  3. Transfer the cooked rice to a wooden/fat edge cutting board or a bowl. Gently fold in the vinegar mixture.
  4. Place a nori sheet, shiny side down, on a bamboo mat.
  5. Wet your hands to prevent sticking, then evenly spread the seasoned rice onto the nori, leaving a 1-inch strip at the top.
  6. Layer the avocado slices, cucumber, and sushi-grade fish horizontally across the middle of the rice.
  7. Lift the bamboo mat edge closest to you and start rolling the sushi tightly, using the mat to press and shape the roll.
  8. Seal the roll by moistening the 1-inch nori strip with a bit of water and pressing it down.
  9. Slice the roll into bite-sized pieces with a sharp knife. Serve with soy sauce, wasabi, and pickled ginger.
